Eleanor Hart

For Whom Time Is Recalled

'There is a sophistication about Eleanor Hart's paintings that places them beyond the diurnal round of much Australian contemporary art. Melbourne born, her Jewish heritage is as ancient as time, nurtured by the culture of Vienna and broadened by the egalitarianism of Australia.

A universal inclination comes to her naturally, finding water as a metaphor of time, recollected and ever changing. As the river flows, its waters traced back passed banks of memories, or on beyond the present, offering perceptions of what is, and is to come. There is a fusion of past and present in much of her recent work, seen in such paintings as Place and Time and Rembrandt Strasse, the vertical inscription on the latter making specific reference to the persecutions in Vienna in 1941. Places remembered. What family told is passed down and revisited by a new generation.

The word is written, and time is recalled.'
