The Marten Bequest

Since 1967, The Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships have assisted many of our young, talented Australians to explore and develop their artistic gifts abroad and interstate with many returning to Australia helping to shape the richness of our cultural landscape.

John Chisholm Marten (1908 - 1966), who established these scholarships through his estate, had a life long interest in the Arts and Literature. For this reason he initiated the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships - one of Australia's most rewarding scholarships - distributing $216,000 per annum to deserving young artists to assist them in achieving their dreams

"This year I was lucky enough to win the painting category of the Marten Bequest. With this scholarship I will be able to study in New York city for the first time and take advantage of the private and public Gallery system. Not only will I be studying in New York but I'll be working alongside some great living American artists as well"
